Did Hailey on Modern Family Get Her Lips Done
Mitch and Cam, Modernistic Family
ABC's venerable comedy Modern Family unit closed out its 10th only not final season with an episode that you've been waiting for almost all flavour: the one in which Haley gives birth to twins. And while Midweek night'south "A Year of Birthdays" delivered on that promise — twice, technically — it did then in a rather unconventional way, building the episode around a year of birthdays for all the Dunphys-Pritchetts-Tuckers, and catastrophe not only on the 51st birthday of Phil (Ty Burrell), but the actual day of nascency for Haley's twins.
The episode opened on his big 5-0, with Phil pledging to learn something new and scary. A yr after and much afterward in the episode, there he was, almost to hit the stage at a children'south pianoforte recital, getting bullied by a fellow student for his advanced age. And then… it happened: Haley (Sarah Hyland) was overwhelmed by her contractions and made a dash for the infirmary. Phil quickly followed, but earlier exiting the building, he did manage to perform the world's fastest rendition of "Für Elise" and take a parting shot at the hateful kid by quipping, "Say hullo to your mom for me."

There would be no obstacles to the obstetrician — non even a "button! push!" moment with Haley and new hubby/old boyfriend Dylan (Reid Ewing) — but a newly crowned mother resting happily in her infirmary bed. As the family gathered in the hospital room, Cam (Eric Stonestreet) and Mitch (Jesse Tyler Ferguson), in matching orange robes, fabricated the grand introduction, parading around the baby boy and girl a la Simba'southward "Circumvolve of Life" scene from The Lion Male monarch, bringing things full circle back to Modern Family'due south pilot episode, when Cam presented babe Lily (Aubrey Anderson-Emmons) in like style.
Hyland was pleased to run across the series aim to subvert expectations of the milestone moment with a fourth dimension-hopping episode. "I don't think it's been washed in that way leading upward to such a momentous occasion," she tells EW. "That was a really cool way of executing information technology, especially ending information technology with such a big matter." Co-creator Steven Levitan, who wrote and directed the episode, says that the thought for an episode built effectually everyone'south birthdays had been in development for a while, unrelated to Haley's nativity-of-twins story. Equally he began brainstorming the nativity plot, "I was very concerned almost all the tropes involved in a nativity episode," he tells EW. "I said, 'Wait a minute, a birthday is the day someone's born, too. Wouldn't that be cool to integrate that into this?'"
Perchance so. But starting time he had to solve the artistic challenge of roofing double-digit birthday flashbacks in 30 minutes. "How exercise y'all make them each unlike and lively?" he says. "How do y'all non make it simply feel similar a bunch of sketches? How do they flow from one to some other?" So he had to sell this fusion of ideas to his writing staff, who had what he calls a "valid concern" about tucking such a pivotal moment into simply the finish of the show. But when the writers started to explore ways to tackle the baby-is-born episode — hardly new territory in sitcom land — "everything had been done that nosotros could think of: the mad dash to the infirmary, the going into labor," he says. "At the end of the day, this just felt fresher to [us], to really put it in the context of everybody's birthday. "I liked that it's just the pure moment of you get to it — you're non living in that for a long time of someone's in pain and they're stuck in an lift or automobile."
Catastrophe the episode on that circle-of-life, pilot-mirroring moment radiates so much closure, it near feels similar information technology could take wrapped upward the unabridged series, non only the flavor. (And this tenth season almost served as the evidence'south final, before all parties agreed to an 11th and final season.) Hyland says that she and her costars were buzzing about that series-finale vibe in the scene. "Going into season x, I was told beforehand that Haley was going to be pregnant, and this is too when season x was going to exist our last season," she adds. "I idea that this season or series would end exactly like this flavor did, which was having the babies, having a circle-of-life moment. I definitely was like, 'That would be a really cute, full 360 to pay homage to the pilot, wrap information technology all up with everybody being together and having this new mod family unit.' But at present nosotros accept another [flavor] after it, then we'll see how they actually decide to finish it. We have amazing writers, and then I know they're going to end it perfectly and top this flavor finale, only… I can't imagine anything better than this."

Dorsum in the fall, when information technology still was unclear if flavour 10 would be the last, the writers planned for the nascency episode to serve every bit the flavor finale that could double as series finale. "For a while there we were like, 'Well, if that'south involved in our [series] finale, that volition be great," he says. "And if information technology turns out that we go some other year, then we'll come up with something else." And while he notes that he would not take anchored a serial finale to this year-of-birthdays story that preceded the birth — "we're going to probably want to assail that in a much unlike manner" — he acknowledges the sense of completion provided past Haley's infirmary ending. "It does have that experience," he says. "And believe me, that occurred to me several times. Like, 'Wow, this ending would've made a adept [concluding moment].'"
The circle-of-life moment arose early in the brainstorming process every bit a cracking, sweet callback to the pilot. "When we decided on twins, that fabricated it even improve because now Mitchell was involved in it, then we liked all that," says Levitan. "We had some unlike variations of this ending, and what we liked about it was that as with Lily, this was the kickoff fourth dimension many members of the family unit ever see the infant when these babies are presented in this way."
Filming the scene was, in a word, quiet. Given that the babies used in the scene were only a few days old, Levitan bundled as calming an environment as possible. "Everybody was really nervous, to tell y'all the truth, because we needed them to exist not crying and we wanted them to be comfortable," he says. "We really warned everybody, 'Okay, while these babies are on the set up, there will be no talking. I don't desire to hear a word from everyone.'"
Several of those warm family unit interactions that viewers see in the wake of the Simba moment were actually in-the-moment suggestions from Levitan and bandage improvisations. "There were a few lines that were scripted, but and then we would shout out — well, not shout — but whisper, 'Hey, say this,' and, 'Do this,'" he says. "And they really felt similar a family unit in that moment. That was, in a weird way, the more than emotional moment, simply watching these people have this very life-changing moment together. Information technology was very, very touching…. There'due south a moment when Mitchell says to Alex, 'You lot're adjacent,' and Claire [Julie Bowen] gives him the look. I retrieve we came upwardly with that on the fly. Even the moment of Claire, in a weird way, finally kissing Dylan. And Dylan getting a little bit emotional, which he was. Those were all but kind of sweet little moments that happened there."
While Hyland knew that the cast would exist doing some bedside improv "because that'south how we did in the airplane pilot, with babe Lily passed around," don't inquire her to call up any ad libs. "I wasn't really paying attention to annihilation only those goddamn babies," she says. "They're the cutest thing in the entire world and my ovaries were exploding and I was only freaking out about that. I was just like, 'Give me the babies.' If somebody else had the babies I wasn't paying attention to what they were doing with the babies. I was just like, 'When is someone going to hand me the babies at present?'"
Hyland was handed a lot of plot twists this season. Non simply did she learn that Haley would marry Dylan — "I definitely idea she was going to be ending up with Andy," she says of Adam Devine'south character. "People yell at me on social media for ending up with Dylan considering they want Haley and Andy to be together and so bad" — she found out that she would be the mother of not only ane, but two children. When Hyland was told about the twins, it looked like the show might cease afterward season 10, and "I definitely was like, 'Well, thank God nosotros're not doing flavour 11!'" she quips. "All joking bated, I thought it was really cool. Information technology's a showbiz thing to say, 'Never piece of work with kids and animals.' When you're at this stage of the baby, you lot have to call back of babies crying and all of that. And then then y'all have two and you lot're like, 'Okay, now we're going to have iv babies on set.' [Two babies are used to play one on screen because of their limited availability and general fussiness, so two onscreen babies requires, well, you can do the math.] I was just actually thinking of the technical aspect of it, specially when we constitute out we were going to be doing season 11. Give thanks God I'k at an age in my life where I take friends that take babies, and I at least know how to hold them and I'm good with kids. I'm grateful that I have experience with friends' children."
Now that delivery twenty-four hour period has arrived, what kind of female parent will Haley prove to exist? "She's going to be very strong-minded, and Haley strikes me as a very applied person, like the way that she parented Lily when Lily was having her first period," says Levitan. "Haley might kind of just say it like it is, and I think she and Dylan will have very different styles. And at the aforementioned time, like a lot of new mothers peculiarly with twins and peculiarly if you accept a busy chore with a demanding dominate, she volition go overwhelmed quite a bit. But at the stop of the day, I remember she will be a vehement and ferocious protector of her kids."
"At that place will definitely be a learning bend," says Hyland. "I think Claire is terrified for Haley because she was her. But I remember she forgets how well she actually handles things." And she's curious to meet how Haley and Dylan handle the challenges of new parenthood, a subject that has been tackled past the show previously, but from a dissimilar vantage point. "The funny will come in with her non knowing what to do and Dylan knowing what to exercise, or maybe both of them non knowing what to do," she continues. "I hateful, that's the fun of having new parents that are immature. [With] Mitch and Cam in season 1 or in earlier seasons, we got to encounter the experience of being a new parent in full general — and, of course, a dissimilar perspective of being two fathers. Simply we accept never washed the young parent. Nosotros've had Phil and Claire talk about it, but yous've never seen it. And so that will exist a really interesting aspect considering she is 25 years onetime, which is a completely normal time to take a baby; in some states that'due south one-time and in other states that's a fetus. I think it will be really fun to accept these two people that have, for the nearly part, always been focused on number 1, and have to larn how to put their wants aside and focus on the needs of their children."
Phil and Claire will likewise be there to provide relief, in the grade of babysitting and comic. Levitan says that when flavour 11 begins, Haley and Dylan will continue to live at the Dunphy firm, which volition turn into a nexus of chaos. "The way that we take it designed is that it actually affects the unabridged Dunphy household on a regular basis," says Levitan. "We gave them twins considering they're going to demand more help, and information technology gives Phil and Claire and the residue of the family something to really be engaged with."
Meanwhile, Haley will return to her chore at lifestyle brand Nerp. "There might be some interesting things that happen with her chore, and so some of the stuff falls on Phil and Claire a bit," he says. "We didn't want to give them a baby and off they go into their own little household. Nosotros want them to be even more dependent on the family for a while, until they become on their feet." Hyland is looking frontward to the workplace plot. "I honey that Haley is on a journey of motherhood, but I have always wanted them to go deeper into her work and career life," she says. "I think it's actually important for young women to encounter."
Here'south one other matter that Levitan volition reveal about the final flavour: It will likely be shorter, at least slightly. Although ABC hasn't confirmed this, Levitan says that he and co-creator Christopher Lloyd are planning to do 18 episodes, which would be 4 fewer than recent seasons — and would end Modern Family at exactly 250 episodes. "That's a dainty round number," he quips. ABC hasn't confirmed an episode total yet, and Levitan does note that the conversations are ongoing: "[I]f information technology makes sense creatively to do more, we're possibly open up to that." (Every bit for the possibility of a spin-off, he demurs. "We're not thinking well-nigh that right now," Levitan says. "Some people have expressed involvement in information technology, but we have by no means had any existent formal talks nigh it or brainstorming sessions near it.)
In case you're wondering, the determination to practise 1 more season was extremely close. "I honestly idea season 10 would be our last, merely every bit nosotros got into information technology, nosotros realized there's nevertheless some new territory to explore," he previously told EW. "Also, if I'm existence really honest, our cast and coiffure really is like a family unit, and I retrieve we just weren't quite ready to say adieu."
Speaking of bye, the writers will outset to mankind out the farewell episode when they reconvene next month to begin work on flavor 11. "We all have some ideas," says Levitan. "It's certainly something we've been thinking about for a long time, and we know we want to end strong. Like most finales of long-running series, there will be an enormous amount of time and thought put into it."
